I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King Jr.6/12/2023 The use of pathos in this speech leaves the audience with a sense of compassion and empowerment. The way King initiated his message through the use of rhetorical devices, pathos, ethos, and logos, allowed his audience to hear and connect with his message sufficiently. Themes such as freedom, unity, a dream, justice, and injustice. Certain themes are also repeated throughout the speech. King wants the audience to retain these elements of the speech as they are the most significant sections. These phrases are being engraved into the audience’s brains so that they remember them and overall make the speech more memorable. Phrases such as ‘Now is the time’, ‘We cannot’, ‘I have a dream’, ‘With this faith’ and ‘Let freedom ring from’. Throughout the speech, the same phrases are repeated. As if African Americans were never truly freed from their shackles. King continues informing the audience how ‘Negros’ still feel imprisoned in modern society, a hundred years after they had been freed from slavery. The speech begins with “Five score years ago” which is quite fitting as he is standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
